Die Sonne
versteckte sich meist hinter Wolken und der kühle Wind machte es unmöglich am
Strand oder am Pool zu sitzen... so entschloss ich mich ein Auto zu mieten um
wenigstens den Rest der Insel erkunden zu können... An der
Reception des Porto Antigo 2 (https://www.facebook.com/portoantigo2)
hatte es einen offiziellen Flyer und ich wurde mit Samira verbunden. Sie wollte
gleich mit ihrem Kia (sehr wahrscheinlich ihrem einzigen Mietwagen - nicht wie
abgebildet...) vorbeikommen, obwohl ich ihn erst am Abend für 2 volle Tage
inkl. Abgabe im Flughafen wollte... wir verhandelten und sie kam um 12:30 Uhr.
Natürlich war alles plötzlich anders: Mehrkosten für Flughafenabgabe und auch
für die 4 Stunden... wir verhandelten neu, machten alles schriftlich und ich
konnte los!
The sun mostly hid behind clouds and the cool wind made it impossible to sit on the beach or by the pool... so I decided to rent a car to at least explore the rest of the island... There was an official flyer at the reception of Porto Antigo 2 (https://www.facebook.com/portoantigo2) and I was put through to Samira. She wanted to come by with their Kia immediately (very likely her only rental car - not as pictured...), although I only wanted it in the evening for 2 full days including drop-off at the airport... we negotiated and she came at 12:30. Of course everything was suddenly different: additional costs for the airport drop-off and also for the 4 hours... we renegotiated again, did everything in writing and I was able to go and explore!

Zuerst
fuhr ich auf der Schnellstrasse nach Espargos, der Hauptstadt der Insel Sal,
und staunte, wie viel ich gestern Rad gefahren bin! Sal ist übrigens ca. 10 x 30 km gross. Dann ging es Richtung Osten
zu den Salinas: Salzwasserbecken im Krater eines Vulkans und man kann sogar
rein! Was ich auch tat und ich schwebte im Wasser wie im Totes Meer. : )
First I drove on the expressway to Espargos, the capital of the island of Sal, and was amazed at how far I rode my bike yesterday! By the way, Sal is about 10 x 30 km. Then I headed direction east to Salinas: Salt water pools in the crater of a volcano and you can even swim in it! Which I did and I was floating in the water like in the Dead Sea. : )

ich auf Naturpisten zur Shark Bay - nach Sant Antao trau ich mir alles zu! ; )
Dort schwimmen doch tatsächlich Zitronenhaie um die Beine ohne einen
anzuknabbern!
Then I drove to Shark Bay on natural tracks - after Sant Antao I dare to do anything! ; ) There indeed lemon sharks are swimming around your legs without nibbling!

Zurück in
Espargos machte ich Halt auf dem Markt um Obst einzukaufen. Dort erfuhr ich,
dass heute der letzte Karneval-Umzug ist und der würde in einer Stunde
beginnen. Endlich Karneval - in Santa Maria hörte ich immer nur die Trommeln
und als ich mich jeweils auf die Strassen begab, war nichts ausser einer Gruppe,
die trommeln übte...
Back in Espargos I stopped at the market to buy fruit. There I found out that today is the last carnival parade and that it would start in an hour. Finally carnival - in Santa Maria I only ever heard the drums and when I went out into the streets there was nothing but a group practicing drumming...

Beim
Warten auf den Umzug lernte ich Kim aus Holland kennen. Wir fanden gleich
dieselbe Wellenlänge und anstatt mit dem Bus fuhr sie mit mir zurück nach Santa
Maria. Weil wir so viel Spass hatten, verabredeten wir uns für den nächsten Tag
um eine kleine Tour zu machen. Wieder ging es zuerst der einzigen Strasse
Richtung Norden nach Espargos, aber diesmal fuhren wir Richtung Westen.
Nördlich von Espargos hat es nur Naturpisten... weil aber so viele
Touristenfahrzeuge sie nutzen, sind sie gut abgeschliffen und ich konnte die 5
km nach Blue Eye problemlos mit meinen Slicks meistern! ; )
While waiting for the parade I met Kim from Holland. We instantly found the same wavelength and she drove back with me to Santa Maria instead of taking the bus. Because we had so much fun, we met the next day to do a little tour. Again, first we took the only road north to Espargos, but this time we headed west. North of Espargos there are only dirt roads... but because so many tourist vehicles use them, they are well abraded and I could easily master the 5 km to Blue Eye on my slicks! ; )

nach Espargos nahmen wir die Piste über Terra Boa, wo man in der glühenden
Mittagssonne Fatamorganas sehen kann... das war heute gar nicht der Fall -
dafür beherrschten der viele Abfall und Slums das Bild... : (
Back to Espargos we took the dirt road via Terra Boa, where you can see fatamorganas in the glowing midday sun... that wasn't the case at all today - instead, the a lot of garbage and slums dominated the picture... : (
